Documents Required for Vietnam

The Vietnamese Embassy or Consular Office in your home country can help you determine what documents are required for your relocation and can issue the proper visas.  In addition, they can often provide advice and information on many other aspects of your move.

Passports

A valid passport with a least 6 months remaining and an appropriate visa are required for all persons entering Vietnam. If one enters the country without a visa, extensions of stay cannot be granted. Each member of a family should have his/her own passport. If a child is included on a parent’s passport, the parent can still leave Vietnam without the child.

Visas

Visas are issued according to the stated purpose of the visit.  It is extremely important that you enter Vietnam with the proper visa when you relocate.  A Business Visa is necessary in order to apply for a Work Permit after your arrival.   Business Visas are valid from 90 to 180 days and up to a year with special permission. These visas allow multiple entries and the right to work in Vietnam. To get a Business Visa, applicants must submit documentation from a business sponsor in Vietnam to show the purpose of their stay.

Visas are issued by the nearest consulate.  Applications may be made by mail or in person.

Work Permits

Work Permits are issued by the Labor Department in Ho Chi Minh City, normally for the duration of the visa. Work permits are usually obtained by the individual’s company. One cannot own or register a vehicle, receive a salary, or begin employment until the Work Permit is obtained.
